If you all you need is a basic RAID array that offers fast transfer speeds (and that you understand that RAID is not a backup, and you still need to make a copy of your data that lives outside of this array) then the Thunderbay could be a really good option. If you are hoping for an experience closer to what Drobo offers (but without the downsides of it actually being a Drobo - because they are garbage) you should instead be looking at Synology or QNAP for NAS systems. If the data from your Drobo is already gone it doesn’t matter, but if not you’re going to need to buy new drives to put into the Thunderbay before you can move anything over. You need to have freshly formatted drives in the Thunderbay before you can begin to move data to it. I’m that same line of thought - there is not going to be a way to migrate your data from the Drobo to the new enclosure. You really do need enterprise grade drives and they all need to be the same size to really get the full benefits - otherwise your array is limited by the smallest size drive you have in the enclosure. In line with not being a NAS, unlike a Drobo you can’t easily mix & match different types and sizes of drives. There is no management software built in, and swapping drives and expanding/shrinking the volume is not a simple process. (That isn’t necessarily bad but it’s important to know). RAID is supported via SoftRAID, but there is no hardware RAID controller built in. The Thunderbays are totally decent enclosures but there are some important things to know. Looking for something more local? Perhaps at some point years down the road I’ll change my mind on the process but for now, there’s just no comparison to having your work internal to your machine. For people that get paid to edit film, video, television, etc. It’s so nice to hit the mouse pull up Lightroom classic and be working on a photo in less than 30 seconds literally. Really, with us just dropping $5000 on a new iMac with 8 times the storage of the MacBook Pro we had it only makes sense in our situation to keep everything internal for quite some time then at that point I will just offload images. This is twice that I’ve tried to transition over to an external hard drive and both times has been sort of disastrous. This has worked for years with no issues and it’s just not worth the hassle and spending $1000 on a drive that makes the process slower and more complicated on top of that. I do multiple time machine back a week, plus drag and drop photos occasionally to an external drive as a copy then do a carbon copy cloner on those as well. It’s just so seamless having everything internal to your machine. I took what was the seamless operation and turned it into a arduous task to get on my desktop and edit photos. Sad to say but it’s headed back to Illinois on a ups truck.
